Let us stand in united prayer, fasting and humbly gracious action, pouring out love for all, to uphold marriage between one man and woman and protect children and freedom of speech and religion:

The team at the National Day of Prayer and Fasting are even more intent on joining with other Christians in calling for a week of prayer for marriage through Marriage Week. The dates for Marriage Week go from Sunday 10 September (Marriage Sunday) to 16 September 2017. Marriage Week has been going since 2007.

Providentially, Ps Wayne Alcorn, President of Australian Christian Churches (ACC) called for a Day of Prayer and Fasting on Tuesday 12 September 2017, in the light of the proposed move to redefine marriage between a man and woman.

The team at the National Day of Prayer and Fasting agreed unanimously to support this initiative and call the wider body of Christ to join this historic National Day of Prayer and Fasting for Marriage. This is the same day that the ballot goes out for the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey on the redefinition of marriage.

You can see this video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXRqShZUd_k

Ps Alcorn wrote, “The ACC National Executive has called for a National Day of Prayer & Fasting among ACC churches as Australia heads towards the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey.

We are calling a National Day of Prayer and Fasting for all our churches, and asking people to join us on Tuesday 12 September 2017 to fast and pray for:

* Our nation, Australia

* Righteous government – at all levels

* Family

* The Church

The ACC supports the Biblical view of marriage as a lifelong, exclusive union between a man and a woman, and recognises the potential consequences for Christians, should the legislation be passed. The ACC is encouraging all Christians to vote ‘NO’.

Let us be prayerful and gracious whilst holding true to our convictions, confident always that Jesus will always keep His promise ‘to build His Church’. Through it all it is important that we are respectful of ALL people; even those who strongly disagree with our views.”

What’s Changed in Britain Since SSM?

This is an excellent article describing some of the consequences of SSM.

The Spectator Australia. David Sergeant
Four years ago, amid much uncertainty, 400 British members of parliament voted to redefine marriage in the United Kingdom.

Then prime minister David Cameron announced that, despite having made no mention of the issue in his party’s pre-election manifesto, it would be MP’s who decided the fate of marriage.

Now, it’s Australia’s turn to choose. There’s one key difference. Unlike in Britain, it will be the people who decide.

Everyone agrees, whether they admit it or not. This is a decision of enormous significance.

Therefore, it seems sensible to analyse the consequences of the potential change, within nations in which redefinition has previously been carried out.

In the United Kingdom, it has become abundantly clear that redefinition has affected many people, across many spheres. At first glance, these spheres appeared distinct from marriage redefinition. However, subsequent changes, have proved that they are entirely intertwined.

Our response to these articles:

One Thing We Can Do

Jesus’ Called Us to Love God and Our Neighbours Well.

Join us to pray that we, the church of Jesus Christ, will see what the Bible says to us about how to love the world around us.1

Christians are divided in the way we see critical social issues. How can this be if we have the mind of Christ? The truth is – we all see only in part. God holds righteousness (wholeness; holiness) in perfect balance justice (mercy and grace) whereas we tend to see only one side of an issue. We can take one position if we see it  from a righteousness perspective and another if we see it from a justice perspective.

It is fascinating to find God’s extensive understanding of our earth’s species and environment and how clearly he knows us and speaks to us. When we surrender our life and opinions to him and let God change my mind on lots of issues, we will become compelled by God’s perspective. The more we draw close to him the more our limited opinions have to be relinquished. With time we sense his heart, glimpse his deep insight and see the painful pervasive and long term consequences if a person or a society tolerates “a little evil” in its midst. Over time we will God get it right so many times that we can trust that what he says is true – even when we don’t understand it. Trust him. He is good and good to us. God loves well.

Let’s submit to be one with God and align with what our Father is saying and doing:

  • So we can be one so the world will see God’s love for them.
  • So our witness and our response to the world arises in the leading and power of His Spirit from that place of rest – where we are in Christ and we have Christ in us
  • So we speak in His holiness, His love, in His timing, His words, by His impulse
  • So we speak convicting truth in love and shine hope in darkness
  • So Christ in us enables us to be love, the way, the truth and the life to all.

A Call to the Australian People to Love Each Other Well.

There are many ways to see the challenges we are facing globally and in our nation. We are in a season of human existence when the core beliefs and values of our society are being overturned. Life in contemporary Australia may seem comfortable for most and “life-style” is highly valued.

But we are at the point where we no longer preserve our most essential agreement – which is to respect, cherish and protect life. Our laws in Victoria now permit the destruction of the lives of full term babies. There are threats to legalise the murder of vulnerable people. Doing whatever we want is creating social confusion, chaos and destruction. Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are being deeply eroded. Many have been persuaded by an agenda that irrationally denies the most fundamental truths of basic biological science and human existence – gender and family. We have disturbing examples of Christian children in ‘safe’ schools who have been publicly bullied by teachers.*  All over the world, and in Australia, innocent people are being killed and maimed by individuals and groups who intentionally seek to destroy our way of life.

Even this brief review of Australian statistics2 shows a steady breakdown in healthy social relationships evidenced by:

  • Increasing child neglect and abuse – including sexual abuse by children.
  • Increasing child/teen sexual activity, diseases and crime – at younger ages.
  • Increasing sexual crime against women.
  • Increasing depression and suicide rates.
  • Increasing sexualisation and sexual pressure on girls and women.3.
  • Increasing use of pornography and violence in pornography – clearly associated with violence against girls and women.3.

An Invitation to Know God’s Love and to let Him Love Us Well.

The people who built the western world were committed to valuing each human life, freedom from slavery and persecution, freedom of speech, conscience and religion, democratic election, justice under law, education for all. Many of the people who established the values and the rationality of our culture’s base in science, order and creativity were directly inspired by their relationship with God.

Examples include Martin Luther who began modern university education from 1520; John Calvin (1509 – 1564) was one of the fathers of modern democracy; Francis Bacon (1561-1626) and Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) who are said to have co-founded scientific method; Blaise Pascal (1623-1662); Isaac Newton (1642-1727); Gregor Mendel (1822-1884); Albert Einstein (1879-1955); and William Wilberforce (1759-1833) who made slavery illegal. 4

The reality is that liberal, Western democracies like Australia owe as much to Christianity as they do to historical movements like the Enlightenment and British institutions like the Westminster system of government and the common law.

That’s why parliaments around Australia begin with the Lord’s Prayer and the Australian Constitution’s preamble includes the words ‘Humbly relying on the blessing of Almighty God’.

Australia’s legal system and institutions, while being secular in nature, also draw heavily on Christian ethics and morality, best illustrated by the ten commandments and the fact that, for years, it was customary for those involved in trials to swear on the Bible.

Freedom of conscience and freedom of religion, in addition to being an essential part of Australian democracy, are also embodied in international rights and conventions.”5

God is a good Father who has reached out to our race to assure us that we each are profoundly loved. When we let Jesus rule in us, he gives us freedoms from addiction and compulsions, and in mercy and kindness, complete and miraculous solutions to our dilemmas and circumstances. God’s Spirit in us brings peace to our inner world, joy in knowing our identity, clarity to all confusion. Because he loves, he warns us that some things we do, over time, will lead to certain destruction – of our lives, of those around us and across generations. When we close our heart to him we cut ourselves off from sensitivity to the Spirit’s leading, from relationship with God as Father, and from eternal life. God has provided free choice but we live with the consequences of our choices. Ultimately God is not inclusive because, in his love, he will only sustain eternally what is harmonious in the next life.

Jesus has made a way for us to live an abundant life and eternal life. I pray that you know the joy, peace, meaning, wholeness and connection made possible by surrendering your life to enjoy intimacy with Jesus through His Spirit. He says, “Come to me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29)

Acts 26:17-18 “I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God.”

2 Thessalonians 2:esp 9-17 “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 13 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.”

John 14:10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.”

John 16:7-8,13-15 … I will send him (the Helper)  to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Proverbs 3:5-7 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.”

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 12 “What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” NIV

Hebrews 13:5-7 … “for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Ephesians 6:19 Pray “that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel…”

John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.”

Luke 21:13-19 ” And so you will bear testimony to me. 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.19 Stand firm, and you will win life.” NIV

2 Timothy 1:12-14 “But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me. 13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” NIV

1 Peter 3:13-17  “Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats[b]; do not be frightened.”] 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”

Colossians 4:2-6 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

2 Corinthians 4:5-7 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.”
